What Will You Learn?

  • The course begins with ASEAN's role as a biodiversity hotspot, focusing on Sundaland, Wallacea, Indo-Burma, The Philippines, and the Eastern Himalayas. Students will understand why biodiversity conservation is crucial despite ASEAN's moderate land area. Topics include threats such as deforestation, climate change, pollution, illegal wildlife trade, and non-native species. Case studies and research explore drivers of biodiversity loss and impacts on ecosystems and human well-being.
  • Students will gain insight into ASEAN's biodiversity, its role as a global hotspot, and understand the various threats to biodiversity in ASEAN.
  • The course also examines institutional frameworks for biodiversity conservation within ASEAN, focusing on the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (AC and national biodiversity policies. Students will evaluate the effectiveness of these frameworks in promoting sustainable development practices and conserving critical habitats. Lastly, Innovative conservation measures like biodiversity credits and law enforcement are explored through case studies. Therefore, this course uniquely combines regional case studies with practical conservation strategies, offering participants actionable insights into biodiversity protection
  • Students will be able to analyze the interconnectedness between biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, the effectiveness of regional and national policies, and evaluate innovative conservation measures and policies.
  • By the end of the course, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the complex challenges and opportunities in biodiversity conservation within ASEAN. Students will gain skills to assess conservation strategies, propose solutions, and advocate for policies enhancing biodiversity resilience.
  • Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in addressing complex biodiversity conservation challenges in ASEAN, enabling them to design and implement effective conservation strategies.
  • Detailed chapter contents can be studied as follows : ASEAN’s Biodiversity and Its Threats, ASEAN’s Regional and National Actions on Biodiversity, Case Studies on Biodiversity Conservation Measures.

Course Content

CHAPTER 1: ASEAN’S BIODIVERSITY AND ITS THREATS.
In this chapter, students will learn the role of ASEAN as a region with numerous biodiversity hotspots, setting the backdrop for the urgency of ecosystem protection and restoration. This chapter will also explain the major threats to ASEAN’s biodiversity, including environmental and human-induced threats. This chapter will prepare the students for the in-depth explanations on the following chapters on how ASEAN states address the issue of biodiversity.

  • Lesson 1: ASEAN’S BIODIVERSITY AND ITS THREATS.
  • Activity 1.2 – POST TEST

CHAPTER 2: ASEAN’S REGIONAL AND NATIONAL ACTIONS ON BIODIVERSITY
In this chapter, students will learn the establishment and role of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (AC in coordinating and enhancing biodiversity conservation efforts across Southeast Asia. This chapter also provides an overview of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) in ASEAN countries, focusing on key policies, achievements, and challenges in each member state.

CHAPTER 3: INNOVATIVE BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION MEASURES
In this chapter, students will explore Biodiversity Credits, which use market incentives for ecosystem preservation, and ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN), focused on regional law enforcement against wildlife trafficking in Southeast Asia. The students will gain insights into skills in ecological assessment and international cooperation essential for biodiversity conservation at local and regional levels.
