What Will You Learn?

  • Understand and apply appropriate dress codes, grooming standards, body language, and communication practices in both business and diplomatic contexts.
  • Utilize best verbal and non-verbal communication practices, adapt to cultural differences, and employ strategies for effective cross-cultural interaction in global professional settings.
  • Properly plan and attend official visits, ceremonies, state dinners, receptions, and meetings, adhering to international protocols and etiquette.
  • Cultivate awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultural norms, especially those within ASEAN countries, to build respectful and meaningful professional relationships.
  • Evaluate and implement key theories and models of cross-cultural communication, such as Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions and Hall’s High- and Low-Context Cultures, in practical scenarios.

Course Content

CHAPTER 1: PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS ETIQUETTE
In this chapter, students will learn about business etiquette. It will cover professional appearance and behavior standards in business settings, including nonverbal communication cues. Additionally, the chapter will explore communication in the business environment and examine the similarities and differences of business etiquette across the ASEAN region.

CHAPTER 2: DIPLOMATIC PROTOCOL & ETIQUETTE
In this chapter, students will explore and learn about diplomatic etiquette and protocol including the key principles and distinctions between protocol and etiquette. It will cover diplomatic communication such as formal and informal communication as well as effective negotiation techniques.

CHAPTER 3: PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS ETIQUETTE
In this chapter, students will explore the concept of cross-cultural communication. They will be introduced to key frameworks and theories in cross-cultural studies that explain how cultural values, communication styles, and social norms influence human interactions. Additionally, the chapter will discuss strategies for developing effective cross-cultural communication skills.
