What Will You Learn?

  • In the "Ocean Environment Resilience & SEA Case Study" course, students will learn comprehensively about the current conditions of marine ecosystems, the definition of ecosystem resilience and its benefits in economic development and social well-being of the world community, factors that cause disruption of the resilience of marine ecosystems, and Sustainable Development Goals and ASEAN Blue Economy Framework for improving ocean governance and case studies in Southeast Asia.
  • Students will acquire a comprehensive understanding of the concept of ecosystem resilience and its application to ocean environments.
  • Detailed chapter contents can be studied as follows: Introduction to ocean ecosystems resilience and tressors/challenges impacting ocean sustainability, Sustainable Development Goals and ASEAN Blue Economy Framework for improving ocean governance in Southeast Asia, Marine protected areas in the context of socio-environment-economic benefits, Case study in Southeast Asia’s Ocean.
  • Students will learn key benefits of the sustainable ocean to the socio-economic dimensions.
  • Students will be able to identify the key human-induced and natural stressors affecting ocean sustainability, such as climate change and ocean acidification.
  • Students will understand the key international agreements and policies governing ocean conservation and sustainable use.
  • Students will learn the concept and purpose of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as well as ecological, economic, and social benefits of establishing and maintaining MPAs.

Course Content

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS RESILIENCE
In this chapter, students will learn about marine ecosystem resilience, including an overview of the current conditions of global marine ecosystems. Students will understand the definition of ecosystem resilience and its socio-economic benefits, as well as explore various stressors that can disrupt marine ecosystem resilience.

  • Activity 1.1 – PRE TEST
  • Lesson 1: INTRODUCTION TO OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS RESILIENCE
  • Activity 1.2 – POST TEST

CHAPTER 2: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND ASEAN BLUE ECONOMY FRAMEWORK FOR IMPROVING OCEAN GOVERNANCE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
In this chapter, Students will learn about sustainable development goals and the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework as a global framework for safeguarding and dealing with various kinds of problems experienced by the sea and also guidelines for utilizing marine resources that focus on economic, social and environmental dimensions.

CHAPTER 3: MARINE PROTECTED AREAS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
In this chapter, Students will learn about the current condition of marine protected areas in Southeast Asia, key benefits and the principles of the implementation of marine protected areas.
