About Course

The course is designed to provide a comprehensive explanation of climate change, emphasizing its historical root causes, recent developments and impacts, and the interconnectedness between economic activities and environmental challenges. Students will delve into the historical context of climate change, tracing its origins to the Industrial Revolution and the widespread combustion of fossil fuels. 

Moreover, the course will explore the development of multinational climate agreements and local policies taken by governments to address climate change and related environmental disturbances. Throughout the course, students will gain insights into the importance of integrating environmental policymaking with economic strategies to address climate change challenges effectively. 

By fostering critical thinking and understanding of these interconnected issues, students will be equipped to evaluate and propose solutions that promote sustainability and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on local and global scales. The course aims to empower students with knowledge and skills to become informed advocates and decision-makers in addressing climate-related issues in their communities and beyond.

What Will You Learn?

  • Detailed chapter contents can be studied as follows : Introduction to climate change: Major causes and impacts, History of climate agreements: From Kyoto Protocol to the Global Stocktake, Principles and forms of environmental policies.
  • Students will understand the history of climate change, particularly its interconnectedness with economic activities and how it impacts the global community and lives on earth.
  • Students will become more familiar with different types, sectors, and approaches of climate and environmental policies.

Course Content

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO CLIMATE CHANGE: MAJOR CAUSES AND IMPACTS
In this chapter, students will learn how economic development has led to historical causes of climate change, particularly from the widespread fossil fuel combustion and greenhouse gas emissions. They will also explore recent climate change impacts in ASEAN, highlighting the link between economic activities and environmental challenges in the region.

  • Lesson 1: INTRODUCTION TO CLIMATE CHANGE: MAJOR CAUSES AND IMPACTS
  • Activity 1.2 – POST TEST

CHAPTER 2: HISTORY OF CLIMATE AGREEMENTS
In this chapter, students will learn about the evolution of global climate agreements, from the establishment of the UNFCCC to the adoptions of the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. They will explore key mechanisms and approaches used to address climate change on an international scale and how this affects environmental policymaking nationally and locally.

CHAPTER 3: PRINCIPLES AND FORMS OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
In this chapter, students will learn about key principles of environmental policy and their applications using examples from the European Union, a regional body similar to the ASEAN. They will also explore various forms of environmental policies, and examine case studies highlighting the diverse perspectives of different communities in ASEAN. After understanding the root cause and development of environmental policy in the previous chapters, this chapter will equip the students with the basic technical and practical understanding of environmental policy.

CHAPTER 4: ASEAN-JAPAN COOPERATION ON CLIMATE & ENVIRONMENTAL
In this chapter, students will understand a brief historical background on the relationship between ASEAN and Japan. They will learn about the partnership between ASEAN and Japan on climate change and environmental matters, examining some of the recent programs and initiatives between the two entities such as SPACE, ASEAN Regional Action Plan for Combating Marine Debris and ASEAN Blue Economy Innovation.

Joining this short course has been a truly meaningful experience for me.
